ATP Ranking: Djokovic’s days as number 1 are numbered

Novak Djokovic’s days as world number 1 are numbered. But Roland-Garros having been postponed for a week last year, the Serb will not lose the 2,000 points of his victory until next Monday, when Daniil Medvedev will overtake him. In the meantime, his quarter-final allows him to stay on the throne for a few more days. Winner of his 22nd Grand Slam title, Rafael Nadal regains 4th place and will be hot on Djokovic’s heels in a week.

But the best case in the Top 10 is to the credit of Casper Ruud. Thanks to his first Major final, the Norwegian gained two ranks, notably overtaking Carlos Alcaraz (7th) to become 6th and reach the best ranking of his career. He will even enter the Top 5 on Monday, taking advantage of the misfortunes of Stefanos Tsitsipas who will lose the points of his final in 2021.

Cilic reappears in the Top 20

He was one of the big surprises of this Roland-Garros 2022. While he had not played a single Grand Slam quarter-final since the US Open 2018, Marin Cilic reached a good semi-final in Paris , the only Major where he had not previously achieved it. And the great Croatian logically reaps the rewards in the standings. Thanks to a jump of six places, he is again among the top 20 (17th) for the first time in almost three years (week of August 12, 2019). Consequently, Grigor Dimitrov leaves the Top 20. The only other change to note: Diego Schwartzman (15th) doubles Denis Shapovalov (16th).

Rune seeded at Wimbledon

Another great sensation of the Parisian fortnight, the young Holger Rune took the opportunity to continue his ascent in the world hierarchy. Quarter-finalist in the Grand Slam at 19, including Shapovalov and Tsitsipas on his career, the Dane now displays the registration number 28, exceeding in the case 12 of his colleagues. While he was one of the dangerous non-seeds before Roland, he is now among the 32 players potentially protected at Wimbledon in a few weeks.

Gaston bounces back, Zapata Miralles changes dimension

He remained on four consecutive defeats (including one in Challenger) before the Parisian Major, but by finding the French public, Hugo Gaston was further sublimated. His good performance against Alex de Minaur and his 3rd round allowed him to move forward in the standings. Now 65th (9 places gained), he is just ahead of Arthur Rinderknech. But the most beautiful operation of the week is to be credited to the Spaniard Bernabe Zapata Miralles. By making his way from qualifying to the second week at Roland, he crossed the barrier of the Top 100 for the first time (96th, +35 places). He will thus integrate more tables on the main circuit: this could well change his life.

• In the Top 100, they are 4 to obtain their best ranking this week: Casper Ruud (6th, +2 places), Holger Rune (28th, +12), Francisco Cerundolo (44th, +1) and Bernabe Zapata Miralles (96th, +35).
• For others, the post-Roland-Garros period is less joyful. Sebastian Korda (38th, -8), Tommy Paul (39th, -6), Alex Molcan (46th, -8), Benjamin Bonzi (57th, -5), Daniel Altmaier (58th, -5), Federico Coria (63rd, -9), Maxime Cressy (67th, -5), Dusan Lajovic (69th, -5), Federico Delbonis (73rd, -8), Carlos Taberner (91st, -6), Jaume Munar (93rd, -6), Roberto Carballes Baena (94th, -5) and Jan-Lennard Struff (103rd, -6) are losing ground in particular.
