Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles soon to return to consoles in “a spiritual sequel to 80s-90s video games”

NOTnine years after the last game of the license, the Ninja Turtles are back in force with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge. Planned for the current of 2022, this title from the independent studio Tribute Games proposes to rediscover the universe of the knights of scale in a universe all in pixels. A tribute to the games of the 80s and 90s, this new beat them all in 2D – progression fighting game – has plenty to do quiver memories of many aficionados arcade cabinets.

Known for his cult cartoon of the year 1987the franchise had its first gaming adaptation just two years later with Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles on Nintendo (NES). Eric Lafontaine : It has always been a dream for the team of Tribute Games to produce a beat ’em up Ninja Turtles. We all grew up with the animated series of the 80s and the video games that were released in the late 80s and early 90s. These greatly marked our imagination as future “game designers”. However, the idea was not to simply create a game of the past but to make a tribute to the Turtles. Which was both an experience bathing the player in nostalgia while providing a modern gaming session.

What video game references are found in the game?

A multitude of references dot the game. The clear references to video games like The Arcade Game and Turtle in Time can be seen. But also many direct references to cartoons and even to the series of figurines and toys from our childhood. In the script, as in the small details of the backgrounds – Turtles fans will have a lot to discover.

Is this Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles video game for fans of the franchise?

The game is made by great Turtles fans, however it is not designed exclusively for fans. The humour, the superb animations will appeal to anyone who loves pretty drawings and funny moments. In addition, both novice and more skilled “gamers” will find what they are looking for with several game modes and difficulty levels. You can simply press the buttons at random and you can create magical fighting moments with your friends: as you can plan your moves in advance to knock out the Foot Clan!

Could we say that without the reputation of the old Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles games, the game would not exist?

Exact. The game is a love letter to the elders beat em up turtles. Without those old games, Shredder’s Revenge would not exist as it is today. The love that fans have for these old games is why we developed this title.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have a very special connection with video games, outside of cartoons. How can we explain it?

The Turtles video games resonated very strongly in our imagination because we could finally embody them. When we were kids, it was an amazing time for us when we played very first arcade machine Turtles pretty soon after the cartoon. It was like playing an episode of the series! This projection in their universe is a memory that many people share.

Would a 3D graphics engine have been relevant for a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game? Why this desire for “retro” graphics?

Tribute Games is recognized for pixel art of great quality. Our corporate mission is to develop aspect games retro with a touch of modernity. So, it was certain that our approach for this game was going to feature high-level pixel art!

Can we talk about the sequel to arcade video games of the 80s and 90s?

Definitely. Shredder’s Revenge is a spiritual sequel to the arcade video games of our childhood. However, we’ve put a lot of effort into making it a modern experience for today’s young and old to enjoy. This is not an archaic experience: the game is easy to approach for everyone and adapts to the player’s abilities. In addition, the game offers a range of movements, animations, attacks and challenges that older games could not offer with the technology before. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge is a perfect blend of nostalgia and modernity.
