The 15 million dollars to which Amber Heard was condemned by the jury were revised downwards by the judge in charge of the case.
The verdict fell on Wednesday evening: in the ultra-publicized trial between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard, who accused each other of defamation, the latter was ordered to pay 15 million dollars to her former husband. This sum, already far from the 50 million claimed by the star of Pirates of the Caribbeanwas immediately downgraded by Judge Penney Azcarate, as reported by the Los Angeles Times. The actress ofAquaman was actually ordered to pay $10.35 million to Johnny Depp.
The verdict was handed down by a jury of five men and two women, after days of deliberation. As specified by washington postthe 15 million decided by the jurors were divided into two parts: 10 million “compensatory damages” – compensatory damages -, and 5 million “punitive damages”, punitive damages.
According to the specialized site Spencer Morgan Law, the former are intended to compensate for the losses suffered by the complainant – Johnny Depp estimates that he lost nearly 50 million dollars by becoming persona non grata in Hollywood -, and the latter are a punitive measure against the convicted person. However, these “punitive damages” are capped at 350,000 dollars in the state of Virginia, where the trial was taking place. It is therefore to this sum that they were reduced by the judge in charge of the case.
From 15 to 8.35 million
In addition, Johnny Depp was also convicted, the jury having considered that one of the points of the accusation of Amber Heard was valid. The actor ofEdward Scissorhands will have to pay $2 million in damages to his ex-wife. Which further lowers the amount that Amber Heard owes him: out of the 15 million initially announced, she will only pay 8.35 million in the end.
Johnny Depp’s complaint, at the origin of this defamation lawsuit, related to the publication of a column published in 2018 in the washington post in which Amber Heard claimed to have been the victim of domestic violence, without however citing her ex-husband.
Amber Heard had replied with another complaint for defamation, concerning remarks by Johnny Depp’s lawyer who had called the statements of the actress false. She was asking twice her ex-husband’s, or $100 million.
The six weeks of this trial broadcast live in the United States were the scene of a great unpacking on the most scabrous details of their life as a couple. Amber Heard recounted, for the first time, an argument followed by an alleged rape in March 2015, during the couple’s stay in Australia where Johnny Depp was filming the 5th episode of the saga Pirates of the Caribbean. The actor had the tip of his right middle finger severed and was hospitalized.
Johnny Depp claims that it was the splinter of a vodka bottle thrown by Amber Heard, which broke near his hand, which injured him. The actress assures that he injured himself. He then used his blood to inscribe insulting messages on the walls, mirrors and lampshades of their rental house.
Johnny Depp had paid Amber Heard the sum of 7 million at the time of their divorce in 2016. A sum that the actress had undertaken to pay to associations.
