The Double or Nothing 2022 Buy In sees Danhausen in his second AEW match teaming up with HOOK to take on Tony Nese and Mark Sterling.
HOOK & Danhausen defeated Mark Sterling & Tony Nese by fall. HOOK carried a Suplex before allowing Danhausen to do the pinfall.
Wardlow is free
The first pay-per-view match is between MJF and Wardlow. MJF is indeed present, takes his time to enter in order to surf on the events of this weekend and even flies. The heat is monstrous, the plan has obviously worked. If it’s a work, it’s a work of MJF all by itself.
Wardlow defeated MJF by fall after a series of 10 powerbombs. MJF attempted to use his ring but the referee saw it and immediately took it away from him. The game is almost a squash and MJF was taken out on a stretcher after the game.
Tony Schiavone then came to announce as expected in the event of a victory that Wardlow is now All Elite. We don’t yet fully know what is work or real for this weekend, but all this history has contributed enormously to making this match an event for Wardlow.
We continue with a team match, the highly anticipated face-to-face between the Hardy and the Young Bucks.
The Hardys beat the Young Bucks by falling with a Swanton Bomb of Jeff Hardy on Nick Jackson.
A strange match in which Jeff Hardy was in a weird state, very slow outside of a few spots and wrestling with a loose boot. An entertaining match all the same, although we are far from the show stealer.
Jade Cargill gets a lot of visits
First league game of the night. Jade Cargill defends the TBS Championship title against Anna Jay in the third matchup of AEW Double Or Nothing 2022.
Jade Cargill defeated Anna Jay by falling with his Jade Slam. A match with a lot (too) of external interventions: the Baddies, Mark Sterling, John Silver, then the arrival of Stockely Hatthaway (that on the other hand, we like).
After the match, while Cargill is celebrating its victory, a new entry resounds: that of Athena (ex Ember Moon in WWE), whom Tony Khan announces in the process that she is All Elite, just like Hatthaway. Everyone starts at the same time tonight, no time to mess around.
New team match then. The House of Black enters to take on the Death Triangle in full.
The House of Black beat the Death Triangle by falling with Malakai Black’s spin kick on PAC which had just received the mist spit by… Julia Hart. It was pretty obvious that she would show up at some point.
Great team game anyway. Lots of great spots and a somewhat failed attempt by Brody King to throw himself outside the ring, good try anyway. The show was guaranteed.
Adam Cole and Britt Baker, victory as a couple
We continue with the first of two finals of the Owen Hart Foundation tournament. Adam Cole, in the colors of the Hart faces Samoa Joe.
Adam Cole defeated Samoa Joe by pinfall with the Boom, taking advantage of a distraction from Bobby Fish to win the Owen Hart Tournament. Samoa Joe seemed to suffer from shoulder pain, Fish took the opportunity to shoot his arm in the ropes, then returned to the charge a few minutes later. Joe knocks him out of the ring with a punch but the distraction allows Cole to carry his finisher.
A somewhat light match, not very dynamic and with a very sudden end. We expected better after Wednesday’s O’Reilly vs. Joe at Dynamite.
We continue with the other final of the Owen Hart Foundation tournament between Britt Baker and Ruby Soho.
Britt Baker defeated Ruby Soho by pinfall with a roll up to win the tournament final. A roll up that countered another, after leaving the Sharpshooter in Soho by going for the ropes.
Adam Cole and Britt Baker thus won the tournament as a couple and were rewarded during a small ceremony just after. Martha Hart came with Tony Khan to give Cole and Baker a belt and the cup after a speech to thank AEW and everyone who helped organize the tournament, as well as the fans.
Sammy Guevara and Tay Conti overconfident
Back to action with a mixed tag team match: Sammy Guevara, Frank Kazarian and Tay Conti take on the Men of The Year and Paige VanZant in the next match.
The Men of The Year and Paige VanZant defeated Sammy Guevara, Tay Conti and Frank Kazarian by pinfall with a TKO of Scorpio Sky on Kazarian.
A somewhat messy match, stories of disagreements between Guevara and Kazarian, Guevara accidentally hitting Tay Conti, all of this largely favors the opposing team who can take advantage of it to win the match. It was quite fun, but it was probably one game too many in this pay-per-view.
We continue with the match between Darby Allin and Kyle O’Reilly, match announced Friday during AEW Rampage.
Kyle O’Reilly defeated Darby Allin by falling with his Bomb Away Kneedrop.
Fairly solid and quite brutal match. A little settling of accounts between two brawlers. Good game but the public was clearly elsewhere during these ten minutes, too bad but not surprising, we have already seen about ten games.
Thunder Rosa reminds who’s boss
It’s a championship game that comes next. Serena Deeb takes on Thunder Rosa for the AEW Championship title in the next match.
Thunder Rosa defeated Serena Deeb by pinfall with her Fire Thunder Driver to retain the AEW Championship title.
Good match, good chemistry between the two wrestlers but unfortunately at this level of the evening it takes more to bring the public who have just seen ten matches.
Anarchy In The Arenathe wild thing
Fortunately the match that follows will wake up the crowd. L’Anarchy In The Arena starts, Moxley’s theme song still resonates and the fight between the Blackpool Combat Club and the Jericho Appreciation Society already begins. The theme song will run for several minutes until Chris Jericho stops it at the control room.
Jericho Appreciation Society beat Blackpool via submission with a chokehold from Jake Hager’s Bryan Danielson with the ring ropes.
A match far too messy to describe in detail. It was fought in the stands, in the hallways of the arena, in an elevator… Many objects were used. Eddie Kingston threatened to set Chris Jericho on fire (at today’s gas prices it’s almost a shame he didn’t) but was stopped by Danielson. A rivalry between the two is already expected.
Andrade El Idolo introduces us to his new partner in a small behind-the-scenes segment. A partner that is none other than RUSH. MJF will never get his raise with all these signings.
We’re back in action with the AEW Tag Team Championship match. Jurassic Express defend their titles against Swerve Strickland and Keith Lee as well as Ricky Starks and Powerhouse Hobbs.
Jurassic Express defeated Swerve Strickland & Keith Lee and Team Taz by pinfall with the Thoracic Express on Strickland to retain the AEW Tag Team Titles.
Excellent match, beautiful tag team wrestling, but the victory of Jurassic Express remains rather unexpected. AEW has a good tag team division, no doubt about it, but it feels a bit like its current champions are stagnating.
CM Punk champ
After five hours of show, we are finally there: the main event of AEW Double or Nothing 2022. Hangman Page defends his title of champion of the AEW against CM Punk.
CM Punk defeated Hangman Page by pinfall with his GTS to become AEW Champion.
Superb match, a pallette of beautiful catches, a suspense maintained with two wrestlers trying to use the finisher of the other – CM Punk will have to avoid the Buckshot Lariat, it’s not his thing. A few well-placed neafalls and a ref bump, a technique that’s always a bit easy to change the course of the match.
It’s Hangman Page’s kindness again that will cost him the victory, while he has the option to sneak Punk with the belt while the referee is still knocked out, he prefers to play it fair. No luck, CM Punk who had time to recover takes advantage and wears a GTS for the victory.
AEW Double or Nothing 2022 had everything it needed to make a good pay-per-view: Surprise debuts, twists, title changes, special entries. But there were also too many matches. Thirteen matches and more than five hours of show is difficult to sustain and it was felt at certain times of the show.
