During the in-cosmetics Global 2022 trade show, Laboratoires Expancence officially launched Calybiota® Bio, an active ingredient that rebalances the skin microbiota and which is extracted from the calyxes of red kapok flowers, a sustainably sourced tree in Africa. This extract is rich in polysaccharides, 100% natural and COSMOS certified.

The calyxes are the parts at the base of the flowers and they are traditionally used in African cuisine to bind sauces.

Responsible sourcing in Africa

Expanscience sources its flower chalices in Burkina Faso, where they are harvested in the Mare aux Hippopotame de Balla classified forest and biosphere reserve, in the town of Satiri. This site is protected by a UNESCO program called “Man and the Biosphere”.

The establishment of this sector has enabled a transfer of know-how to local communities with training in good harvesting practices and the construction of the cooperative’s headquarters in the village of Balla (store, office and meeting room).

In addition, a field study for the environmental and social impact notice (NIES) was submitted in 2020 to the National Agency to assess the environmental impact of the sector.

In addition, the red kapok tree is an oxalogenic tree, that is to say that it presents in its metabolism the “oxalate-carbonate pathway” which, in collaboration with microorganisms (bacteria, fungi, etc.), allows the formation of calcium carbonate in the soil. It is one of the most sustainable forms of carbon sinks.

Skin microbiota and intimate flora

The skin is colonized by billions of bacteria which participate in the regulation of immunity and the barrier function. Preserving microbiota homeostasis is essential for maintaining healthy skin and mucous membranes.

The vaginal microbiota is made up of 90% lactic acid bacteria (lactobacilli) which colonize the vagina at puberty.

These lactobacilli have very specific functions. They stimulate the local immune system and form biofilms which create veritable protective shields. They transform the glycogen secreted by the cells of the genital mucosa into lactic acid, thus creating an acid environment necessary to maintain the vaginal pH between 3.5 and 4.5.

The vaginal pH reflects the state of the vaginal microbiota: a pH above 4.5 indicates that there is an imbalance in the vaginal flora, also called dysbiosis. A state of dysbiosis can be accompanied by symptoms such as unusual discharge, itching or vulvar pain and can sometimes lead to infection (mycosis, vaginosis etc.). During menopause, the pH is naturally at 4.5.

Each woman hosts several types of lactobacilli that will evolve during her cycle and her life depending on hormonal variations, her environment, her intimate hygiene, her sex life, etc. [1]

Calybiota® Bio protects women’s intimate flora

In-vitro studies have shown an anti-inflammatory effect of Calybiota® Bio with a reduction in the expression of numerous inflammation mediators (IL1α, PGE2, IL1β and TNFα) on cultured epidermal cells, and a prebiotic effect on lactobacilli of the vaginal flora.

On the one hand, the evaluation of bacterial growth and viability demonstrated a prebiotic effect of Calybiota® Bio on strains of lactobacilli present in a healthy intimate flora: L. gasseri, L. acidophilus, L. rhamnosus, L. crispatus and L. jensenii.

On the other hand, the results showed a bacteriostatic or even anti-microbial effect of Calybiota® Bio on pathogenic strains: G. vaginalis and E.coli.

These results were confirmed by a clinical study carried out on 4 groups of women n=48 (post-vaginosis, post-mycosis, irritation & post-menopause). The women used in their intimate area, a cleansing gel once a day and a cream twice a day formulated with Calybiota® Bio 1.25% for 28 days. The evaluation was carried out on D28 compared to D0.

The results of this study showed that Calybiota® Bio:

- Has a prebiotic effect on Lactobacilli L. crispatus (+31%) and L. jensenii (+29%) but not on L. iners, a lactobacillus more likely to promote dysbiosis conditions of the vaginal flora.

- Reduces inflammation (IL1 α -9.5%**) for a soothing effect.

- Reduces feelings of discomfort and hydrates the intimate area (dryness -74%**, erythema -75%**, fissure -90%**, irritation -78%**, burning -92%**, pruritus -93 %**).

- Improves women’s sexual life (dyspareunia -83%**)

A satisfaction questionnaire was also carried out with the participants with very good results obtained:

- 89% of women found the product reduced their feelings of irritation

- 81% of women saw an improvement in their sex life

- 87% of women that the product had reduced their intimate dryness

Thus, Calybiota® Bio is particularly recommended for intimate hygiene care. As shown in the clinical study, this active ingredient protects the vaginal flora and improves intimate comfort. The balance is restored for an improved sex life!

Calybiota® Bio is also recommended for acne-prone skin, skin prone to atopy, eczema or hypersensitivity, as well as for deodorant formulas.

In atopic dermatitis, Calybiota protects the epidermis against pathogenesis linked to S. aureus.

In acne and seborrheic dermatitis, it rebalances the skin microbiota by inhibiting pathogenic strains C. acnes and Mr furfur.

Finally, it reduces axillary odors linked to strains C. xerosis, C. striatum and S. epidermidis with great potential for deodorant applications.
